Aldgedeslegh

an epic poem about events relating to the parish of Audley

No parish is free from its stories of death and misery, Audley is no exception, the underlying motives for the events recounted in this poem are universal and could be transported to any time and any place.

The poem addresses the ever-present spectre of Death who, residing at the parish bounds, readily accepts any invitation to visit, whether by the call of Lust, the pursuit of Power, the drive for Profit or the opportunity to renew acquaintance with his oldest friend Revenge.

The four stories within the poem move on through time, carrying  with them the underlying link of untimely and violent  death, the payment for the price of our imperfect humanity in an imperfect world.

The annual book prize, which was established in 2017 to mark the 150 anniversary of the birth of Arnold Bennett, attracted a record number of entries including from a number of nationally-known authors.
The shortlist of four includes Deborah McAndrew for her play Dirty Laundry and The Guardian’s Charlotte Higgins for Red Thread, which tracks the history and myths surrounding labyrinths.
They are joined by two poets; professor of creative writing Dr Jonathan Taylor for his anthology Cassandra Complex and retired consultant psychiatrist Dr Roger N Bloor for Aldgedeslegh, four linked poems about Audley.

Poems for the NHS London launchThursday 17 January 2019, 7:00 pm – 10:30 pmThis is London launch of Poems for the NHS, an anthology including established poets (such as multiple award winners Mimi Khalvati, Penelope Shuttle and Carol Satymurti), up-and-coming poets and new voices, all marking 70 years of the NHS. The reading will include poems about receiving life-saving treatment, about the people who deliver that treatment with empathy and resilience, about friends and family and their intimate journeys and about the impact of both ill-health and the effect of the interventions aimed at curing it. The reading celebrates the fact that access to medical care doesn’t depend on the lottery of good or bad fortune, and we hope it is a fitting way to mark 70 years of an extraordinary institution. All profits from the book are being donated to NHS Charities Together. The anthology is published by The Onslaught Press and edited by Matt Barnard, a London-based poet.

How exciting to see the finished book - well worth all the writing and lino-cutting and many thanks to the Audley and District Family History Society for publishing it - Aldgedeslegh  is available on Amazon  now or direct from me or the ADFS after Christmas - watch out for the book launch
