This Glossary was originally developed by Dr Ian Bloor as an Appendix to the Centenary Compendium of Jabez Stories ( stories in North Staffordshire dialect) and expanded by Roger Bloor to include further entries from a variety fo sources.
North Staffordshire dialect has its roots in a variety of sources including Celtic, Old English, Scandinavian and French. Many words remain unchanged from their original pronunciation and meaning, such as blart ( to cry) from the Old English blætan, or boggart ( a malevolent spirit) from bòcan the Celtic for a ghost.
